soundproofing ceiling and/or walls

miradJuly 22, 2007

Hi all. We would like to finish our basement. Given that it will have a guest room and a home office (where I will actually see clients) and I have little kids afoot upstairs, a friend recommended I soundproof the ceiling and maybe even the wall between my waiting room and the office. Does anyone know what is involved with this? what type of cost it adds? and if it really works? Thanks for any advice.

Quietrock is the simplest effective solution. It beats the other most common ones I've tried--another layer of drywall on resilient channel and/or sound batts between the joists.

Another approach, which I haven't had a chance to try out is QuietFloor on the floor above. If you're using Quiet Floor be sure to plan ahead for your framing--add height to the doorways and drop floor framing, if possible.

What kind of ceiling are you planning, drywall or ceiling tiles? Fiberglass ceiling tiles have fantastic acoustic properties. There is also a combo fiberglass tile/drywall tile called Acoustic Best. I've also heard of a product called Decibel Drop that goes on between drywall layers and helps reduce the sound.

The thing I wish the people who lived here before us had used was Noise Barrier. Its a vinyl sheet that you attatch to the studs before the drywall. It really helps reduce sound transmission.

What we ended up using was fiberglass ceiling tiles and acoustic wall panels in our basement. We don't have an office or bedroom down there, but we do have noisy kids that it is their playroom and since the room we mostly hang in is right at the top of the stairs, it was important that we keep some of the noise down so we could enjoy a tv show or movie without hearing their shrieks or their movies or games.
