Care of wood finish?

robins143March 13, 2011

I finally found the china cabinet that I have been searching for. It was buried in a junk pile in an 'antique shop'. It was a shop full of trash actually... My poor husband was such a good sport. We had to move mounds of crap to get to my gem.

I cleaned off the thick layer of dust, but should I do anything to protect the original finish? Wax,etc? I want to be able to pass this on to my daughter, who shares my love of vintage/antique things.

Thanks,

Robin

I would clean it with mineral spirits and then apply a good coat of paste wax....presuming all else is fine.

What is the general condition of the piece? Is the piece solid wood or vaneer? I use Old English with lemon oil which cleans and protects the finish and gives a polished appearance. We have a house full of wood pieces including American oak antiques, and I use Old English on everything.
