Which would you prefer to see in a basement, a typical hang out bar with bar size fridge, sink, and barstools, or a kitchen area with a standard size fridge, stove, microwave and an eating area with a table and chairs?
We combined and have both. For holiday food preparation we have a 2nd cooking area. And, when entertaining it is not necessary to transport food down a flight of stairs. The bar is still comfortably sized to hang and we tried to make the area look more like a bar than kitchen.

kathyanddave, I also live in the KC area and would like to ask you if you can give the store name of your custom cabinet maker. I saw that you live in the KC area on one other post. I am going toward the bar type in basement with a base cabinet of 60 inch against the wall with an island right in front of that for bar stools.
Mike, The cabinet maker we went with was Wachs Woods Cabinets they have a showrom in Grain Valley, and in Odessa. Their # is 816-230-4454. They were really great, and the owners name is Brandon. Hope everyting works out, and keep us posted on your basement
I am doing my basement. Always wanted and thought I would want a Bar Bar.
After much consideration, I decided to get w/ a Wetbar. Main reasons: wetbar won't promote alcohol as much to our kids when they get older, wetbar takes up way less room than regular bar w/ bar stoles, wetbar makes the basement not look as much as a basement.
