Can you use joint compound over a primed wall

andrelaplume2March 25, 2010

I just decided I want another smaller closet along a wall I have already taped and primed. The closet would come off this wall at a 90 angle. I'd of course then have an inside corner at the back to tape and mud. Can you mud over a primed wall?

Sure, or a painted wall too for that matter. Tape and mud will adhere the same way as to new drywall.

In many cases you actually prime damaged drywall before skimming it with compound to limit the water absorption in the damaged drywall.
