donating collection

rj56February 27, 2011

A local historic preservation organization is having an antique auction to raise funds. I'm at the point in my life where I'm ready to part with my green depression glass collection and perhaps some of my antique furniture. Does this sound like a reasonable option at this point? I'm pretty sure my kids do not want any of the items, and I don't have an easy way of selling them otherwise.

Sounds wonderful! Lord knows funds for historic preservaion and slim to none....wonderful thing for you to do.
But check with your kids mother gave away a lot of things I would have liked because she thought "no one is interested."
Ask first.

I think it's a great way to get rid of it for a good cause.

I don't know what your financial situation is (and you shouldn't be sharing it with us if it's at all traceable) but you may wish to talk with your accountant about the tax benefits of donating to a charity--you may be able to get a significant tax deduction if you itemize the year you donate...but you will need a receipt from the charity to do it out with them ahead of time, etc.

When I was the director of a nonprofit, I spent a significant amount of time writing thank you/valuation letters for donations (to be used for this purpose).

What happens to it if you donate it and it doesn't sell? Do you have to haul it back home, or do they simply give it away, or store it for next time? That would be just to help you make your plans for the day!
