Trying to preserve a paper label on a box.

I was recently given a box made by my great great grandfather here in Louisville Kentucky in November of 1890. I know he made it then because on the inside, he signed his name and drew some beautiful embellishments around his signature.

The problem I am facing is that the label is deteriorating. I am trying to think of a way to keep it from crumbling away further. Whatever it is, I want it to be elastic enough to account for wood movement, but durable enough to preserve the label indefinitely. I am at a loss for such a product- any suggestions?

I've not used it for valuable document preservation....but I think Mod-podge would work...
