Revarnishing a table

barb_n_kevJanuary 10, 2011

Does anyone have any advice on this? We purchased this table from a restaurant, so there is some wear in the varnish. The table has a nice sunburst stain on it, so I'd rather not sand it all the way down. My understanding is that if I put a new varnish on, it should basically fill in the scratches and bind to the old. Is that the case?

Well....a problem might be is the existing finish varnish or lacquer?
If it's an old finish it shouldn't matter...
You need to sand some so to give the new varnish something to stick to....and make sure all traces of wax, grease and oil are gone before you apply new varnish.
